Tim van der Wel (Avila Raison): ‘South America is in my heart’
You can certainly call Tim van der Wel an expert in the field of South America. He has visited every country in South America – and many beyond. Tim runs Avila Raison with his wife Hilda. Reisbiss interviewed him about his love for South America.
Do you remember the first time you visited South America?
Of course I remember that! It was 2004 when I went to Peru for a few months for a graduate program. I fell in love with South America then and still do. I have now visited all countries outside of the Guyanas, often multiple times or for extended periods of time. South America is in my heart and I have a deep and very loving relationship with the continent.
What is your personal favorite country?
Venezuela! Because there I met my dear wife Hilda. I have lived in Peru and Venezuela and visited Argentina, Chile and Colombia several times. South America lives in me.
What’s a must-see when you’re in South America?
Tough question… Be surprised, take your time and travel with an open mind. And preferably with Avila Reason, haha! I am still amazed by the cleanliness of South America. Wherever I am in South America, I always feel like I need to be in that place at that moment.
