America suffered a painful exhibition defeat on Saturday night. Colombia was by some measures too big for the seven-time Gold Cup winner. PSV players Malik Tillman and Ricardo Pepi came on as substitutes.
With four Premier League players, three Serie A players, two Bundesliga players, one Ligue 1 player and one La Liga player in the starting line-up, America fielded a strong team. However, this is not the case for Colombia, who are one place lower in the FIFA world rankings (from eleventh to tenth). Within twenty minutes, the South Americans were leading 0-2 thanks to goals from Jhon Arias and Rafael Santos Borre, who turned FedEx Stadium upside down with a bicycle kick.
The U.S. made something happen again through Timothy Weah, but after Tillman and Pepi got into the lines, Colombia were still behind. It was 1-4 after a Richard Rios shot on a rebound and a well-played attack by Jorge Carrascal. The final score came from former Feyenoord player Luis Sinistera, who capitalized on an errant play-in pass to make it 1-5.
The U.S. will practice against Brazil on Thursday. The Copa America for the United States begins on Monday, June 24 in their home country. It is in a group with Panama, Bolivia and Uruguay.
