The worst scenario for British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s party losing more than a thousand seats | outside

Ahead of the coronation of the new King Charles, the ruling Conservative Party suffered a crushing defeat in a by-election in the United Kingdom. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s party looks set to lose more than 1,000 seats, according to opinion polls. This was the worst scenario the Tories had ever imagined.

The elections held yesterday relate to the leadership of 230 local governments distributed over more than 8,000 seats. This was the biggest test for the government ahead of the parliamentary elections, which are likely to be held in 2024.

According to the first results, the party lost 144 seats in the local government. The main opposition Labor Party won 96 seats and the Liberal Democrats won 40 seats so far. The Conservative Party has so far lost majority in five chambers.

Tough evening

If the results are extended – and all opinion polls indicate this – the Conservative Party will lose more than 1,000 local seats. Since taking office in October, Sunak has focused on restoring his party’s credibility after his predecessor Liz Truss held out for 49 days and Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s resignation over multiple falsehoods.

Sunak said the election results so far showed that people wanted his party to “focus on its priorities and achieve”. He also states that it is “still early”. “We only have a quarter of the results,” said the Conservative leader.

Many members of the opposition are already describing it as a disaster for the ruling party. An MP on behalf of the Conservatives described it as “a very difficult evening”, and it could get even tougher. In the previous local election in 2019, the Conservatives lost 1,300 seats. Shortly thereafter, Prime Minister Theresa May was forced to resign.
