Sweden regrets Morocco’s decision

Sweden on Friday expressed its desire to maintain its “good diplomatic relations” with Morocco.

This statement comes in the wake of Rabat’s summoning of the Moroccan ambassador to Sweden in response to the incident of burning the Qur’an in Stockholm last Wednesday during a demonstration in front of a mosque.

Spokesperson for the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs Europa Press Let him know that Sweden regrets Morocco’s decision. He renewed his country’s desire to improve bilateral relations with the Kingdom. “It is unfortunate that Morocco has chosen to recall its ambassador,” the spokesman said.

The Stockholm incident sparked reactions around the world. Several Arab and Islamic countries criticized the Swedish authorities for allowing the demonstration. The Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, stressed that “governments bear the responsibility not to incite extremism or tolerate the spread of hateful and anti-Islamic ideas.”
