South American duel gets completely out of hand: ten red cards, nine in one minute | sports

The match between Universitario and Gimnasia de la Plata in the Copa Sudamericana got completely out of hand. Uruguayan referee Esteban Ostwisches saw both teams fighting en masse in stoppage time, forcing him to hand in no less than ten red cards.

Peruvian club Universitario de Deportes received a visit from Argentine club Gimnasia La Plata yesterday and there was a lot at stake for the home team. Universitario hopes to secure qualification to the next round of the Copa Sudamericana against fellow group Gimnasia with a win.

In the first half, the home team took the lead with a goal from Piero Quispe. Universitario eventually held that lead, but the game wasn’t over with all 22 players. Not even by a long shot. Twenty minutes from time Ignacio Miramón was sent off the field with two yellow cards for the visitors, but things turned sour in injury time.

After a powerful charge, both teams were hit and the referee had to act aggressively. He drew an additional nine red cards. The losing team in particular showed its worst side: eight of the ten cards were destined for Chimnasia, which was also promptly eliminated from the tournament.
