Barcelona was in desperate need of a win to avoid falling behind Real Madrid at the start of the season. The traditional rivals achieved victory in the first three matches, while Barcelona already suffered from losing points in the opening match against Getafe (0-0).
There was no problem at first for Barcelona at La Ceramica. The visitors led 0-2 after fifteen minutes. Gavi scored the opening goal, after which Frenkie de Jong doubled the lead. With a little luck, the Dutch international received the ball at his feet through a Villarreal defender and scored from control.
But Villarreal came together before half-time. Juan Foyth reduced the home team’s deficit and Alexander Sorloth, who has played for FC Groningen in the past, equalised. Alex Baena gave Villarreal the lead in the 50th minute (3-2).
Substitutes Ferran Torres and Robert Lewandowski prevented Barcelona from losing a league match for the first time since 2013 after taking a two-goal lead. Torres scored after a combination by Javi. Lewandowski scored from the rebound after 16-year-old Lamin Yamal hit the post.
