Fimk Pohl was named European Athlete of the Year 2022 in the Estonian capital Tallinn, and 22-year-old Amersvortsi won three gold medals at the European Championships in Munich. She was a favorite over Belgian all-around athlete Navissatu Thiam and Ukrainian high jumper Yaroslava Maijucic.
Paul had a particularly successful year. She won silver at the World Indoor 400-meter Championships, followed by silver in the 400-meter hurdles at the World Outdoor Championships in Eugene. Then she gave a unique performance at the European Championships in Munich where she won gold in the 400m hurdles and 400m hurdles. She also won a gold medal with the relay team in the 4×400 metres. Paul finished the year with an overall Diamond League victory over 400 hurdles.
“I still feel happy when I think about it. It was a great performance,” Paul said of her “golden duo” at the European Championships in Germany. “It was definitely more difficult than I thought. It’s not easy because it’s completely different. But I am happy that the coaches challenged me to do this and we achieved it together.” Last year, two-time Olympic champion Sivan Hasan was named the best athlete in Europe.
Men’s winners
The European Athletics Federations selected men’s winners. Pole vaulter Armand Duplantis of Sweden and Jakob Ingebrigtsen of Norway has been named Athlete of the Year.
Duplantis won the world title in Eugene in the United States with a new world record of 6.21 metres. A few weeks later he also became the European champion. The 22-year-old Norwegian running phenomenon won the gold in the 5000m at the world championships, but had to take the silver in the 1500m.
