Cup success postpones Messi’s official debut in America

Lionel Messi’s MLS debut is taking a little longer. Messi was scheduled to make his MLS debut with Inter Miami on August 20 against Charlotte. However, with the Florida club having enjoyed significant success in the League Cup since Messi’s arrival, the program will have to be adjusted.

Led by the Argentine striker, Inter Miami reached the quarter-finals of the tournament between the clubs of the American and Mexican leagues. Messi has already scored seven goals in four matches, including two goals in Sunday’s stunning match against FC Dallas (4-4), which was decided on penalties.

Inter Miami will face Charlotte FC in the quarterfinals on Friday. Because one of the two teams will play the final or third place match on August 19, the mutual competition match will be postponed. According to Major League Soccer, Messi’s official debut will take place on August 26 against the New York Red Bulls.

Major League Soccer kicked off at the end of February and has now been on hiatus for a few weeks due to the League Cup. Inter Miami are at the bottom, but are hoping to move up the pecking order with Messi and Spaniards Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba, who have also been recruited.
