Here are some other attacks on senior politicians from Latin America in recent years.

Jair Bolsonaro, Brazil

Brazil’s far-right President Bolsonaro was stabbed during his first campaign in September 2018. He was rushed to hospital and underwent emergency liver surgery.

Jovenal Moss, Haiti

In July 2021 Haitian President Moise was shot dead and his wife Martine Moise was seriously injured when heavily armed assassins entered the couple’s home.

IVAN DUQUE, Colombia

During a visit to an area near the Colombian-Venezuelan border in June 2021, right-wing Colombian President Duque’s helicopter was hit by multiple bullets. Authorities blamed former FARC rebels.

Francia Marquez, Colombia

Colombia’s current vice president, Marquez, narrowly escaped elections in May 2019 when assailants threw grenades and opened fire on him and other environmental activists.

Nicolás Maduro, Venezuela

During an August 2018 public address in the capital Caracas, Venezuelan President Maduro accused political opponents of trying to kill him using drones loaded with explosives.
