Women’s World Cup | England start with a razor-thin victory over Haiti under Sarina Wegman

England v Haiti was a big versus small match, but there wasn’t much to notice on the pitch in Brisbane. Haiti played a very good game and held up well, also because England simply did not play that well.

Nerves may have been bothering England, but it should not be underestimated that several supporting players are suffering from serious (knee) injuries. For example, Captain Leah Williamson and target machine Beth Meade as well as a few others are missing.

It remained exciting until the last minute and Haiti had several chances to equalize, but the lead was eventually decided in the 29th minute. Georgia Stanway used a penalty kick the second time.

Firstly, Curly Theus emerged as Haiti’s hero by making a cunning save, but the VAR rightly concluded that she had left the goal line too early. The ball hit the spot again and Stanway’s volley proved good for the win and three points. However, Wegman cannot be satisfied. The field game wasn’t really enough for that.

It’s the Netherlands’ turn in the Women’s World Cup finals on Sunday morning. The Aries Lionesses will face Junker Portugal at 9:30 am.
