Former US President Donald Trump has submitted a request to the court to delay the processing of classified documents in the Mar-a-Lago case until the 2024 presidential election. And American correspondent John Postma thinks the postponement could be overturned.

“If Trump can extend it, if he wins the election, he can try to pardon himself,” Postma explains. However, it is unclear what this will look like in practice and what exactly is possible. “Experts disagree because it’s never happened before, but it’s something Trump is addressing.”

witch hunt

The former president has also always kept the political game in mind. As election day approaches, it becomes more political and it becomes more difficult to convict him as a presidential candidate. There is another strategy behind Trump asking for a postponement because he will be in the news.

“He uses everything for his own propaganda”

It’s all part of his game. As soon as he is mentioned, he uses it in his propaganda, for example saying there is a witch hunt against him,’ says Postma. Trump is taking various cases against him and making it his own story. According to the American reporter, he does this mainly to influence public opinion.

This isn’t the first time Trump has asked for the Mar-a-Lago hearing to be postponed. For example, his attorney and confidante, Walt Nauta, was unable to attend the original hearing, and the upcoming trial was moved up four days. Earlier Nauta was unable to attend the trial due to inclement weather in Miami. Then it too had to be moved, and angry tongues say that these delays have now formed a pattern,’ says Postma.

Support

Meanwhile, many American voters continue to support Trump despite various scandals and current affairs on his hands. Postma sees himself getting away with it, at least this time.

“I wonder what moderate voters think about Trump”

“We’re in the middle of the primaries, and he’s clearly the front-runner and the favorite. But it’s now mainly about fanatical and radical supporters and candidates. I’m curious to see how it will look during the elections if the moderate voters turn out, which won’t be until the end of next year, so there’s a little bit of that. It will take time,’ says Postma.
