Dutch duo Alexander Breuer/Robert Meusen and Katja Stam/Rasa Schön have reached the knockout stage of the Beach Volleyball World Cup in Rome. Both pairs also won their second set match at Foro Italico without losing a set.
Brouwer and Meeuwsen defeated a Mexican pair 21-13 21-15, and Stam and Shawn were too strong for the Chile duo 21-17 21-15. The Dutch medal contenders won their first group match on Friday in a convincing fashion.
Stefan Bormanns and Matthew Emers played their first World Cup match on Saturday morning and won it in two sets against a Chinese duo. On Saturday evening, Leon Lewini and Ruben Benninga will be in matches for the first time in Rome. Christian Farrenhorst and Stephen van de Velde, who won the first group match on Friday, closed the programme.
Numbers 1 and 2 of the twelve groups advance to the knockout stage, just as the top four numbers 3. The other 3 numbers compete in an intermediate round for the remaining four places in the knockout stage.
