You dream of a big, beautiful house, a renovation, a new bathroom, a long trip, or a nice evening for dinner. Purchasing a New Year’s Eve ticket is a staple for many people during the holidays, even though the chance of winning is not high.
“Loterijen spelen vooral in op het heerlijke gevoel om weg te dromen bij ‘wat als je wint'”, vertelt consumentenpsycholoog Patrick Wessels. “Hoe levendiger ze dat voor weten te stellen, des te meer mensen een lot kopen.”
De slogans ‘geloof in geluk’ en ‘Oudejaarsavond kan het gebeuren’ van de oudejaarsloterij spelen daar duidelijk op in. Ook heeft de loterij ieder jaar een reclame waar geluk samenhangt met het kopen van een lot.
Vorig jaar verkocht de Staatsloterij ruim 7,1 miljoen oudejaarsloten. De kans op het winnen van de jackpot van 30 miljoen euro was 0,00000014 procent. Die kans is drie keer kleiner dan in Nederland getroffen worden door bliksem.
Onderzoeker en econoom Esther-Mirjam Sent weet dat – zelfs als mensen zich bewust zijn van de kleine kans op succes – het vooruitzicht om een enorme som geld te winnen mensen optimistisch en opgewonden kan maken.
