Netherlands secure final in 4×400 medley, Denzel Comenencia eliminated | World Athletics Championships

World Athletics ChampionshipsThe Netherlands narrowly escaped in the 4x400m medley at the World Athletics Championships in Eugene, USA. The relay team finished second behind the United States, with Lee Marvin Bonevacia, Leek Claver, Tony Van Dieben and Eveline Salberg.

The Netherlands clocked in at 3:12.63 while the US won in 3:11.75. Those were two of the best times in the heats, as the nations were short in the second series. The Dominican Republic, who won silver in Tokyo, won the series in 3.13.22.

Last summer, Ponevacia and Claver, along with Femke Boll and Ramsey Angela, were part of a relay team that finished fourth in the final of the 4×400 meters at the Tokyo Olympics, a relatively new field in athletics.

An athlete may be transferred to the finals. It is obvious that Femke will take Sahlberg’s place. At this World Cup, Boll competes individually in the 400m hurdles, but is also the fastest Dutch player in the 400m. The final match of the series will be held today at 04.50 pm.

Bonevasia is the fastest Dutch athlete in the 400m race. He recently became Dutch champion for the sixth time in Apeldoorn. Van Dieben competes in the 800 meters in Eugene. The two were also part of the men’s 4x400m team that won a silver medal at the Games in Tokyo.

Denzel Comenentia was fired

Denzel Comenzia has not qualified for the hammer throw final at the World Athletics Championships in Eugene, USA. The 26-year-old athlete from Amsterdam, who trains and lives in the US, was frustrated by three false attempts in the qualifying round.

Comencia was the first Dutchman to play in the World Championships at Hayward Field, a modern athletic stadium in Eugene (Oregon). At the last Dutch championships in Apeldoorn, things went wrong and he couldn’t get the 7.26 kg bullet out of the cage properly in all three attempts. In Eugene, he scored three times against the net of the cage.

“Definitely worse”, he said after his match. “It technically didn’t work. It’s a problem I have to work on. Something wasn’t right in my first two spins. In turn, I already feel that a correction is needed, but you can’t stop your effort and start again because you only have 30 seconds.

Comenzia is not already one of the candidates for the medal. His best distance this season is 75.21 meters and thus he is not very high in the world rankings. “I finished 24th, so I am not bothered by competition anxiety. Hammer throw is a technically difficult event and I need more time to work on my technique. I learn from every international competition and carry it with me to the next competition.
