NATO forces suffer burns and broken bones in the Kosovo conflict | outside


Kosovo declared independence in 2008, but it was never recognized by Serbia. The European Union and the United States recognize Kosovo as a state.

Of Kosovo’s population of 1.8 million, 92 percent are Albanians and 6 percent are Serbs. Most of the latter group lives in northern Kosovo. They do not recognize the administration of Kosovo. This is why they regularly clash with the authorities.
