Joost Luiten started with a round of 71 at The Open, the British major. The 37-year-old Dutch golfer is equal, therefore, with five strokes more than South African Christo Lamprecht, Britain’s Tommy Fleetwood and Argentine Emiliano Grillo, the leaders after day one.
Luiten made two bogeys on the first nine holes at Royal Liverpool Golf Club, but made two birdies on the second nine holes. This puts him in joint 32nd place after the first day.
Lamprecht and Grillo scored 66 in seven birdies and two bogeys. Fleetwood made six birdies and one bogey. Australian golfer Cameron Smith, winner of last year’s British Open in St Andrews, finished the first day with a 72 stroke, one short of the course average. Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy did one stroke better and played on an equal footing as Lutin.
Americans Brooks Koepka, Xander Schoevelli, and world number one Scotty Scheffler hit an innings hit of seventy strikeouts, one short of the tournament average. Windham Clark, the American winner of the US Open last June, is three strokes below the average for Jobs.
The British Open is the oldest and most prestigious golf tournament in the world. Dutch top golfer Joost Luyten is an outsider, but 37-year-old Plesswicker is unfazed by the state of the competition. “Whether it’s the Open Championship or the smallest tournament on the tour, I’m always going for the win,” Luiten said in an extensive interview with this newspaper.

Sure, of course there were jitters and nerves. That first time, debuting at The Open, made a huge impression on Joost Luiten. Eight editions of the famous tournament later, and with six European Tour victories in his pocket, Luiten has been tried and tested in the world of international golf and is no longer easily impressed. “Of course the Open is a big tournament, probably the biggest in existence, but I approach it and treat it like any other,” he said before the start of the 151st edition, this time at the Royal Liverpool Golf Club in Hoylake, on the west coast of England south of Manchester. “It would be strange if I suddenly started doing things completely differently, just because it’s the World Open,” said Lutin, who achieved his best ever result in a major European championship with a 32nd-place finish in 2019.
