The exclusion of Joost Klein (26 years old) in the last Eurovision Song Contest is not a reason to refuse his participation in the next edition. Jean-Philippe De Tinder, president of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), said in an interview with Swedish radio station P4 that Joost is welcome if he complies with the rules that apply to all participants.

“If that participation is in line with the rules, I see no reason to exclude him.”

“I think it’s up to AVROTROS to decide which candidate they send to Eurovision. If this entry is in line with the rules, I see no reason to exclude it,” says Jean-Philippe. In recent weeks, Joost has hinted at a new bid in 2025, also for Belgium.

It remains to be seen whether AVROTROS will send someone next year. The broadcaster wants the EBU to make structural changes. Other delegations have also complained about unsafe working conditions. According to Jean-Philippe, no one has withdrawn yet. He added that countries have until the end of September to make a decision.

Criticism of the situation behind the scenes has also led to an independent investigation, the report of which was published on Monday. It has been announced that a number of organisational changes are underway. Jean-Philippe said the rules must be clear to everyone. “When the Eurovision Song Contest started 70 years ago, the rules were just one page. Now they are hundreds of pages. We want to make sure that everyone understands them, that they are accessible, but also that we communicate them to everyone around the world. A clear way of explaining them.”
