From loser to Olympian: The Amsterdam Lions are proud that lacrosse is Olympian again

Lacrosse will become an Olympic sport in 2028. There are a number of international players at the Amsterdam Lions Club and it is natural for them to hope to be there. International player Femke de Boer said: “I never expected this. When I started, I was a real loser and couldn’t do anything. Now that the opportunity has arisen, we will all go for it.”

Lacrosse is often described as air (ice) hockey. It is true that it is a real physical sport for men, but for women there are different rules and it is more about tactics and speed. “We can have less physical contact,” de Boer explains.

The aim is for the rules for men and women to be equal by 2028. Teams participating in the Olympic Games will also consist of six people. Lacrosse is a popular sport in America and Canada, while it is still little known in Europe.

Eligible?

The qualification process for the Olympic Games is not yet known specifically. However, the spirit exists among the people of Amsterdam. “We definitely still have to work hard, but I think it can be done. We needed a kick in the ass and now we’ve got it now that it’s the Olympics. We have to win.”
