It is the first time that baseball players have won a bronze medal in the European Championships. The Dutch baseball team is the absolute record holder with 24 European titles. The last four editions have also been won by the Netherlands. In the semi-final match, the team lost to Spain 6-1 and then lost 6-7.
The Netherlands fell behind against Germany due to Simon Baumer’s goal. Homeruns by Juremi Profar and Dashenko Ricardo and a German error led the Dutch team to a 3-1 lead. Then Germany came back 3-3 and that was also the score after nine innings. In extra time, Germany scored one goal, but Ricardo’s second goal gave the Netherlands two points and the bronze medal.
Spain won the European title a day after the match against the Netherlands. The lineup was too strong for Great Britain in the final (11-2)
