Told in sometimes conflicting flashbacks, the story follows Pradeep’s family’s first months in America after leaving India. Eight episodes have been ordered.
Amazon Freevy revealed more about the series in a press release:
Today on Amazon Freebie The Pradeeps of Pittsburgh, an original comedy series starring Emmy nominee and SAG Award winner Naveen Andrews (pictured), comedian Sindhu Vee and Tony nominee Megan Hilty.
Inspired by the personal experiences of Emmy nominee Vijal Patel (is black, in the middle), the series follows the Pradeep family and their comical adventures in their first months after moving to America from India.
Told through hilarious (and often contradictory) flashbacks from an interrogation room, the Pradeeps soon become entangled – romantically, personally and professionally – with a hostile neighborhood family, leading to a dilemma with many surprising twists. The eight half-hour episode series is produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon Studios.
Writer Vijal Patel will also serve as showrunner and executive producer. Emmy winner Sarah Gilbert (Roseanne, The Big Bang Theory), Mandy Summers ( That ’90s Show ) and Emmy winner Tom Werner (Connors) executive producers. Michael Showalter (SearchParty (2016)) will executive produce and direct the pilot from Semi Formal Productions.
“The series comes from a very personal angle, exploring many aspects of the migrant struggle,” Patel said. “As my parents used to say, pain gets funnier over time — like wine.”
“Pittsburgh’s Pradeeps shines a comedic light on a classic, universally relatable first-generation experience,” said Lauren Anderson, head of AVOD original content and programming at Amazon Studios. “We look forward to sharing Vigel’s personally inspired story — full of heart, humility and humor — with Freeview audiences.”
“Vijel not only created a rich world, but also took a deeply personal take on the immigrant experience based on the heart and shame of real-life families,” said Jason Clotfelder, co-president of Sony Pictures Television. “We’re thrilled to see his story come to life with our partners at Freevi.”
The premiere date for the comedy series will be announced later.
