He was still playing in the Kitchen Champion Division in 2020, but Branko van den Bomen (27 years old) is now a great gentleman in Ligue 1. In the match against Nantes: 1-5.
The Midfielder of Veldhoven continues to write fairy tales. The story is now well known, but still: the French southern club tracked down Van den Bomen thanks to statistics. And it now proves almost every week that he’s so low rated in the Netherlands: he’s previously failed to reach the Eredivisie at Willem II and sc Heerenveen, and it was recently announced that PSV are aiming themselves at him.
And this is not crazy either. Van den Bomen is a star of Toulouse FC and was also important in the cup final they won: He provided the assist for the opening goal, Stijn Spearings (ex-RKC), Tejs Dallinga (two goals) and Zakaria Aboukhalal (ex-PSV, One goal) to make their mark.
Van den Bomen thus won his first prize at the highest level, but – if he stayed at all – he would not leave European football. US investment fund RedBird owns Toulouse, but it also co-owns AC Milan: two clubs (partly) of the same owner are not allowed to play in Europe.
Eindhoven?
It is highly questionable whether Van den Bomen will stay longer in the south of France. The midfielder’s contract with his refined kicking technique expires and he is transfer-free in the summer. Add to that the fact that there is a lot of interest in him and Veldhovenaar could make a nice transition. Eindhoven? yes I’d like to. “I’ve always had a warm heart for the club,” he said recently at Rondo.
