Australian ports are disrupted after the cyber attack, and the disruption may last for days

Goods cannot enter or leave the country via DP World Australia ports. The company operates ports in the eastern cities of Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne, and one in the western city of Fremantle. Goods can still be left on ships, but trucks supplying or transporting goods cannot leave ports. As a result of the attack, the Australian government began a crisis meeting, Home Affairs Minister Clare O’Neill wrote on the messaging service. The country’s supply chains may come under pressure, and the disruption is likely to continue for several days, according to its government.

Australia, an island country, depends largely on sea traffic for goods from outside the country. Shipping represents 99 percent of international trade by weight, and 91 percent of fuel is imported into the country. Of the total ship traffic in and around Australia, 89 percent is for export. The country exports a lot of coal and iron ore, among other things.

The nature of the attack or who is behind it is not yet known. Following the attack, a DP World employee shut down all of the port authority’s internet traffic with the outside world, causing a number of the ports’ cargo handling systems to stop working properly. A spokesperson told ABC News they would investigate further.

Darren Goldie is involved in dealing on behalf of the Australian Government. He is the National Digital Security Coordinator, and was appointed in July this year following a series of cyber attacks and data breaches in Australia. For example, cybercriminals broke into Australian restaurant Pizza Hut, stealing the delivery addresses of approximately 193,000 customers. In September last year, hackers hacked the telecom company Optus. The data of 9.7 million customers and former customers, more than a third of Australia’s population, was stolen.

DP World serves 40 percent of Australia. In the region, DP World Australia has eighteen ports in various countries, and says a total of 7,000 people work for the company in the Asia-Pacific region.
