In 1973, a particularly successful recording of Antonin Dvořák’s “American” Quartet was made with the Prague String Quartet – at the Narodni Dum Zisko, Prague’s “national home” for theater performances, balls or dance events. The string quartet in F major Op 96 has plenty of dance elements: almost jazzy rhythms, syncopations and pentatonic touches. Dvořák wrote this quartet during his sabbatical as director of the New York Conservatory in just 16 days in Spillville, allegedly in a kind of creative frenzy. He noted in the score that it was the second composition written in America. His twelfth string quartet was published in 1894 by Simrock Publishing in Berlin.
