After nearly twenty years of silence, the Rolling Stones release a new album named after a working-class London neighborhood: Hackney Diamonds.

The three remaining band members announced it in person on Wednesday afternoon at the Hackney theatre, after which the album was named.

It is the group’s first album of new music since it received a lukewarm reception Bigger blast from 2005. This was followed in 2016 by another collection of blues covers under the title Lonely blue. The idea for it originated in the studio when the first impulse for Hackney Diamond I got stuck.

Latest recordings with Charlie Watts can be heard on the new record. The drummer passed away in August 2021. The rest of the percussion comes from his replacement, Steve Jordan. Former guitarist Bill Wyman also plays on one of the two tracks with Watts.

The album’s announcement followed several weeks of carefully orchestrated speculation. At the end of August, the band ran a dummy newspaper advertisement in a London neighborhood newspaper Hackney Gazette. This is supposed to be a promotion for a new glass company: “Hackney Diamonds, a glass repair specialist, opening in September 2023”.

Then the Stones’ marketers mixed up some song titles: Our friendly team promises you satisfaction. When you say give me shelter, we’ll fix your broken windows.’
