3 August 2021 – Edson Alvarez (23) has won a good award for his outstanding performance during the Gold Cup. Ajax midfielder Annex Defender has been named the South American team of the year in which he lost to Mexico (0-1) in the final against the United States.
In the final, Ajax gave the player a free kick, from which Miles Robinson headed home the winning ball. Despite this, Alvarez is seen as one of the pillars of strong Mexico, and has gone viral with a Frenzy de Jong-like triple.
Alvarez started all games during the match on behalf of Mexico and was only replaced in the quarterfinals against Honduras with a 3-0 lead. 43 times Mexico took two yellow cards in the International Gold Cup: losing against the United States after extra time in the opening game and in the final.
