The new YouTube Premium Lite subscription is being offered to some users in several European countries for €7 per month. A Google spokesperson confirmed that the Netherlands is one of the countries where the new subscription option is being tested. “It’s in the testing phase.”
So far, a YouTube Premium subscription costs €12 per month in the Netherlands. YouTube Premium offers ad-free video viewing and downloading for offline viewing and the ability to play videos and music in the background. Subscribers can also access YouTube Music.
The new Premium Lite offer only offers ad-free viewing of YouTube videos, but not the other options. Ad-free viewing not only works via the web and YouTube app on iOS and Android, but also when watching via smart TVs and game consoles. It also applies in YouTube Kids-a program.
Depending on feedback from test users, YouTube may offer more subscription options. The Premium Lite option is “not available for every account” during this stage, according to a Google spokesperson.
YouTube Premium had more than 30 million subscribers worldwide in the fall of 2020. Google has not made the current number public.
