Trump may announce presidential campaign: ‘He can’t go back’

Since losing the 2020 US presidential election to Joe Biden, Donald Trump has been hinting at another run for the presidency. He may make that announcement tonight. “I don’t think he’ll ever recover from that,” says American reporter John Postma.

It is not yet certain that this will actually be a fresh attack on the presidency. But with the expectation of a ‘big announcement’, it seems so. “He really worked towards it. He’s been teasing this moment for weeks. As usual, if you look at the emails from the Trump campaign that have continued, you can see that the money is already being collected. No ordinary politician who built this up like this could ever get out of it.

The moment of this ‘big announcement’ was planned just before the mid-term elections. But after that election, Trump’s momentum completely disappeared. ‘Initially there was an expectation that he and his party, the Republican Party, would win that mid-term election. It looks different now,’ explains Postma. ‘You see the development where there is a lot of criticism about him. That criticism comes mainly from people far from Washington,’ Postma notes.

Criticism will mount

According to the reporter, these are ‘former politicians, governors and Fox News’ who are just guns with no ratings’. ‘That criticism is there, but important people are still holding it back and waiting. It will be a tough time for Trump because it could go either way. It’s not like saying goodbye to him yet.’

So Postma thinks he needs to ‘clean up’ his image. “He wants to show again why he would be a great Republican leader. In addition, he has to explain why it’s not his fault that the Republican Party is not as successful as expected. That will be a U-turn for him, because he will have to tell a completely different story than he thought.’

He is also expected to intensify his battle with Ron DeSantis, Florida’s most popular governor. He came out of the election well. Trump needs to make it clear to Republicans that he is not the best man of the future.
