Simona Halep continues Wimbledon | sports
Simona Halep defeated American Amanda Anisimova in two sets in the Wimbledon quarter-finals. The score was 6-2 6-4 for the 30-year-old Romanian, who has yet to lose a set on London grass this year.
Sixteenth seed Halep finished after 1 hour 3 minutes when Anisimova fouled a backhand. Halep led 6-2 5-2, but failed to serve the match at that score. At 5-4 she got another chance and after trailing 40-0 she won five points in a row.
“I am very emotional now because it means a lot to me to be back in the semi-finals. Fortunately I was able to come back in the last game,” said Halep, who won the tournament three years ago. “I’ve had a tough year, but I’m back and trying to regain my confidence.”
For Halep, this is the first time since the 2020 Australian Open that she has managed to reach the round of four at a major tournament. In the semi-finals, Halep will meet world number 23 Elena Rybakina. The tennis star from Kazakhstan beat Australian Agla Tomljanovic this afternoon in three sets: 4-6, 6-2, 6-3. For 23-year-old world number 23 Rybakina, this is the first time she has separated a Grand Slam final by one win.
The other semi-final battle will be tomorrow between German Tatiana Maria and Tunisian Anas Jaber.
