Rooney picks Giacomakis and Puig for special exhibition match – Football International
Georgios Giacomakis, Ricky Puig and Matt Miaska are three of the 26 players who will face Arsenal as Major League Soccer’s All-Stars and there was a thorough process ahead of the friendly in July.
In America it is very common to organize tournaments with all-stars, the best players of a tournament then come together in one team. In football, a special match has been organized around the meeting with Arsenal, who are looking to prepare for the new season in America. The match will be played on July 19 at the DC United Stadium.
12 of the 26 players were voted on by fans, media and players. A further 12 players have been selected by Wayne Rooney who will lead the team against Arsenal. The latter two players were added by MLS boss Don Garber.
Former Vitesse defender Miazga is proving popular with the fans and has been selected. The same goes for Roman Bürki, who left Borussia Dortmund last year. Giacomakis, a former tourist, was selected by Rooney, as was Puig. Other big names in the 26-man squad are Hector Herrera and Christian Benteke.
