Republican DeSantis withdraws from the US presidential race and supports Trump | outside
Republican Ron DeSantis is suspending his candidacy for President of the United States. The Governor of Florida now supports Donald Trump.
The 45-year-old DeSantis has long attracted a lot of attention from Republican voters. At the beginning of last year, he had a slight lead over Trump in several opinion polls. However, DeSantis did not actually announce his presidential bid until May.
Then his campaign got off to a slow start. In recent months, DeSantis' popularity has slowly declined in the polls and been eclipsed by Trump.
The latest confirmation of this was the result of the Republican primary in Iowa. Trump was able to add a record victory on January 15 with 51 percent of the vote.
“I cannot ask our supporters to volunteer and donate to our campaign if we do not have a clear path to victory,” the current Florida governor said in his video message.

With DeSantis' campaign over, Trump has only one competitor left: former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley.
Vivek Ramaswamy, who has presented himself as the younger heir to the Trump movement, and Trump critic Asa Hutchinson had already left the race after the result in Iowa.

De volgende voorverkiezingen zijn in New Hampshire en Nevada, twee minder conservatieve staten, waar kiezers op het oog verder bij hem vandaan liggen dan die in Iowa. Na Nevada volgt South Carolina, waar Trump ook ijzersterk is en kandidaat Haley betere papieren heeft dan DeSantis.”
