Mark Gillies has now been out of intensive care for a week. Although he is receiving the best care and training hard, the Gillies family say in a new update that the process is still difficult.

“We as a family are also facing a difficult time with a lot of concerns.”

Mark’s recovery is “step by step,” the family says. “Everything takes a lot of energy.” He’s getting physical therapy in the form of walking, cycling in bed and stretching exercises. “That way, his muscles are trained to get back to normal.”

Mark has also suffered a serious psychological blow and is also undergoing treatment. “For example, memory trainers are used, where he has to put things together and they try to make him say and think a lot on his own.”

The family is optimistic but realistic. “Everything looks promising and we are very proud of him, but we also see that he is going through a tough time physically and mentally,” they say of his progress. “We are helping him where we can, but as a family we are also going through a tough time with a lot of fears.”

“We will get there together, step by step,” concludes the Gillis family, who once again thank “all the staff who care for him and everyone who thinks of him and shows compassion.” “We get energy from that.”
