Many Dutch people claim that they are less affected by the heat when they are on holiday in southern Europe than they are when they are at home. Could southern Europe really be any hotter? Two experts explain.
Luchtvochtigheid is het sleutelwoord, legt meteoroloog Raymond Klaassen van weerbureau Weerplaza uit. “In het zuiden van Europa is de warmte vaak droger. Dat komt door de droge lucht, waarin minder waterdamp is opgeslagen. Dat zorgt ervoor dat je over het algemeen minder last hebt van de hitte. Vocht in de lucht kan ertoe leiden dat het benauwd aanvoelt. Dat is het grote verschil.”
“Een hele droge luchtsoort zit rond de 10 procent luchtvochtigheid”, vertelt Klaassen. “Dan is de lucht heel droog. Boven de 55 procent is de lucht minder droog en ga je dat steeds meer merken. En boven de 70 procent en 75 procent is de lucht al heel vochtig. Rond de 90 procent tot 100 procent wordt de lucht zelfs mistig.”
In tropische gebieden ligt de luchtvochtigheid het hoogst. “Daar zit je bijna altijd boven de 80 procent en dat voelt superwarm aan. Dat maakt je benauwder en laat je voller voelen. Een vochtige lucht op je huid heeft ook consequenties. Als de lucht droger is dan is het makkelijker om te transpireren, daar komt het op neer. Je hebt als het ware geen vochtige deken om je heen hangen.”
NU.nl-klimaatverslaggever Rolf Schuttenhelm sluit zich daarbij aan. “Hoe vochtiger de lucht, hoe minder goed vocht vanaf je huid verdampt – waardoor het moeilijker is om die huid af te koelen. Daardoor voelt het warmer aan.”

Humidity depends on wind direction
And whether it is wet or dry, it mainly has to do with air currents. The southern air coming from the Sahara is mostly dry. Claassen: “If we encounter a southeast current, we also have dry air. Then we’d better take it outside than have warm air full of water vapor.”
“Humidity also depends on air pressure and wind direction. We are often affected by low pressure areas in the Atlantic Ocean, which have updrafts that absorb a lot of moisture,” adds Schottenhelm.
Does the dry period also affect the humidity? Claassen says yes, but states that the effect of air supply is by far the largest. “It mainly has to do with where the air is supplied from. You may have had a dry period, but if it’s supplied by sea air, it’s still damp.”
The southern supply can be very dry in the Netherlands. “This is air that comes mainly from the Sahara. It still has to cross the Mediterranean, but even then it’s still very dry, which makes it more manageable – even as far as Holland.”
However, not every southerly wind in the Netherlands dries up completely, says Schottenhelm. “Something else often plays a role in our hot summer days. Then a southerly wind comes in, for example from Spain, which may have come from the Azores there – and so it has some moisture in it. That supply can actually lead to temperatures Very harsh in the Netherlands. This is because the air from Spain to Holland cools down. And because cold air can contain less moisture than warmer air, the humidity goes up when it cools down. In Spain then it’s 35 degrees and it’s easy to handle, and in the Netherlands it’s 30 degrees and hot.
