In a special press conference on Sky Sports, captain Suzanne Pietersen announced her four wild cards.

Madeline Sackstrom (Sweden)
Gemma Dryburgh (Scotland)
Caroline Hedwall (Sweden)
Emilie Christine Pedersen (Denmark)

With Sagstrom (2x previously in the Solheim Cup), Hedwall (4x) and Pedersen (2x) Petersen clearly goes for experience. Dryburgh is a freshman debutant. Last Sunday, the first eight players who qualified for the rankings were already confirmed:

Celine Boutier (France)
Maya Stark (Sweden)
Charlie Hull (England)
Leona Maguire (Ireland)
Georgia Hall (England)
Lynn Grant (Sweden)
Carlotta Siganda (Spain)
Anna Nordqvist (Sweden)

This qualified Celine Boutier and Maja Stark Women’s European Tour Points List, the other six were in the Rolex Rankings, thanks to their ranking in the official world rankings. This includes Saxstrom, Tryburg, Hedwall and Pedersen. The Norwegian captain now has a very strong team at his disposal, perhaps one of the strongest European teams in history.

No Anne Van Dam

Unfortunately, the 2023 version does not feature Ann Van Dam’s name. The current 127th-ranked woman in the world was the best woman at the Scandinavian mixed event in May, but that wasn’t enough to win captain Pietersen’s confidence. On top of that Solheim Cup Ranking Arnhems was 32nd. Van Damme made his debut in Gleneagles in 2019 when Europe defeated the USA. In 2011, Christel Boljan was the first Dutch player to qualify for the prestigious tournament.

The US team will announce the wild cards on Monday, August 28, after the CPKC Women’s Open, which still counts toward qualification. Captain Stacey Lewis has three wild cards.

Europe has been strong four times in the last six editions and could win the Solheim Cup for a third time in a row at Finca Cortezín in Andalusia. Due to the pandemic, two versions are now played consecutive years. In 2024 the Solheim Cup will be played in the United States and in 2026 the Bernardus Golf will be held in the Netherlands.
