Dutch volleyball players failed to get a ticket to next year’s Olympic Games in Paris. Against the Dominican Republic in OKT, a 3-0 or 3-1 win would have been necessary, but that mission was in vain.
The Netherlands can only get past the Dominican Republic in the Olympic Qualifying Tournament (OKT) classification if it wins 3-0 or 3-1 in sets. In this case, the number of sets won will be in favor of the Netherlands. Because the Dominicans won the first group in Ningbo, China, 25-20, national coach Felix Koslowski’s team could no longer afford to make any mistake.
The Dutch volleyball players recovered with a 20-25 win in the second set, but things went wrong in the terrifying third set. Although the Dutch team came back from a huge deficit, the Dominican Republic eventually took the lead 2-1. In the end the Dominicans opened a gap and won the set 19-25. The competition is still ongoing, but the Netherlands can no longer obtain an Olympic ticket. The Dominican Republic goes to the Games.
There is still a safety net for the Dutch national team, which now depends on their position in the June world rankings. Five more countries will qualify for the Games via this juncture. The Netherlands finished fourth at the Rio Olympics. Dutch volleyball players have disappeared in Tokyo.
The Dutch started OKT with an unnecessary defeat to Canada, but recovered with victories over the Czech Republic, Mexico, Ukraine and host nation China. Serbia turned out to be so strong, making the world champions the first country to qualify for Group A for next summer’s Olympic Games in France. The Netherlands ranks fourth in the OKT rankings.
