A new Peruvian pomegranate producer has completed its first export season

A fresh pomegranate grower with a packing station in the fruit fly-free region of Dagna in southern Peru, near the Chilean border, has exported 13 containers this season to six countries across North America, Europe and Russia.

Taking advantage of Peru’s fruit fly-free status, the company shipped two test containers of oranges to the United States. According to Roberto Persivale, CEO of Evergreen Agro Farms (EGA Farms), the company sources fruit from 50 small-scale farmers in the area. They have set their sights on growing next season. “This is our first year and I think we have succeeded. We have shipped 13 containers to six countries: USA, France, Netherlands, Sweden, Canada and Russia. So far the fruits have arrived in good condition in various countries. Destination ports. Last week we shipped two oranges. All If all goes well, next year Washington will ship 25 containers of naval oranges, and another 25 of pomegranates. That will be 50 containers between 9 and 28 weeks of 2024.”

As EGA’s packing station is close to the Chilean border, the company uses the port of Arica, which is 50 km away from the port in Peru. “We are happy with the new customers, and some are already interested in our project with small-scale farmers in this remote location in Peru. With this test we are going to expand our packing station, because now we can only produce the equivalent of one. container per shift.”

“Our certifications for the first year are GlobalGAP and BRC. Next season we want to get Smeta. Being in our southern region in Peru, we have unique deep red pomegranates and our customers confirmed this. Last season we exported pomegranates from the 12th week. In the 24th week , but we expect to start next year in week 7 or 8 with a new group of growers,” concludes Persivale.
