The US tennis team has made a convincing start to the United Cup, a new country mixed-team tournament in Australia. In the first group match against the Czech Republic, Taylor Fritz and Madison Keys both won their singles matches. Fritz beat Jiri Lejica 6-3 6-4, and Keys was very strong to Marie Bouzkova 6-4 6-3. The meeting in Sydney continues on Friday with two singles matches and, if necessary, a mixed doubles match.
The United Cup can be compared to the Hopman Cup, the tournament that was always staged in Australia at the start of the season until 2019. Eighteen countries participate in the Nations Cup, which is accepted into the ATP and WTA world rankings based on the location of the best tennis player and tennis star. The Netherlands is missing from the tournament.
The fight for the United Cup, which lasts eleven days and takes place in Sydney, Brisbane and Perth, is preparation for the Australian Open. The tournament includes Iga Swatic, Rafael Nadal, Caroline Garcia, Alexander Zverev, Belinda Bencic and Stefanos Tsitsipas. The value of the award is 15 million dollars (more than 14 million euros have been transferred).
