Former President Donald Trump may find out whether he is guilty of election fraud and sedition sooner than he thought. The Attorney General asked the US Supreme Court to issue an urgent ruling.
The Supreme Court must decide whether Trump can be convicted on these charges. The court and Trump’s lawyers must respond to the request by December 20. The latter has already declared that the request violates the US Constitution.
Prosecutor Jack Smith’s request is extraordinary. But he said a quick decision was in the “national interest” and “important for preserving democracy.” Otherwise, there is a high probability that the trial will not begin on March 4.

For Trump, postponing the case would actually be beneficial in light of the upcoming presidential election. Primary elections are scheduled to be held in a number of states on March 5th. If Trump wins, he could suspend his impeachment.
