World Title in play for Stephanie Gilmore

Stephanie Gilmore (AUS) has the chance to claim the ASP Women’s World Title at the Cascais Women’s Pro this week. The penultimate stop on the 2014 Samsung Galaxy ASP Women’s World Championship Tour, could see a conclusion to this year’s hotly contested World Title race.

There are four surfers still in contention heading into the final two events of the season: Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS), Tyler Wright (AUS), Gilmore and Carissa Moore (HAW).

Gilmore, currently with 55,950 points, is the only surfer with the chance to clinch the ASP Women’s World Title in Portugal. Gilmore can only win, what could be her sixth World Title, in the following scenario:

– Gilmore would have to win the event
– Wright could finish no higher than 5th
– Fitzgibbons and Moore could finish no higher than 3rd

If things do play out in Gilmore’s favor, her points would be unbeatable regardless of what happens at the Target Maui Pro, the final women’s event of the season.

“The World Title race this year is incredibly exciting,” said ASP Women’s Commissioner, Jessi Miley-Dyer. “I can’t wait to see what plays out during the event and see whether anyone has what it takes to stop Steph (Gilmore).”

Surfline, official forecaster for the Cascais Women’s Pro, have called for:

Minimal WNW swell traces are expected for Wednesday and Thursday. Swell moves in for Friday before easing into the weekend. Small W/WNW swell is on tap for early next week.

Small surf has forced a lay day today at the Cascais Women’s Pro but there is solid swell on the horizon. Event organizers will reconvene tomorrow morning at 7:30 a.m. local time (GMT +1) to assess conditions and make a call for the day.

When competition commences, up first will be Malia Manuel (HAW), Johanne Defay (FRA) and Pauline Ado (FRA) in the opening heat of Round 1.
