I am still coming off the high of the blockbusters from last weekend. The massive Stanford win over Oregon has changed the BCS title chase and all but eliminated the Ducks. The Cardinal completely shut down the flying Duck offense and Mariota’s speed was ground to a halt by the monsters in the Stanford defensive pack. If McCarron is the most underrated QB in College Football, then Kevin Hogan is the second, he was calm, controlled and accurate all night. Don’t read too much into the 20 point last quarter by Oregon, the game was put to bed by then and the boys from the Farm were soaking it in.
Down south the Bears keep impressing, waiting for a team worthy to prove their status of contenders. Bama seem able to just play within themselves, they absorbed LSU’s blows, measured up their strengths and with some steely composure simply over powered the Tigers to win handsomely. The Tide play with an aura made up of intimidation, composure and power that is unrivalled. It’s weird, but it seems like they play with a sense of knowing, they don’t take long to weigh up what level they need to be at to win and from there they execute; clinical in the way they will dismantle their opponent. It’s fantastic to watch.
I have been all about Texas Tech this season, some could argue a slight man crush on Kliff Kingsbury has clouded my thinking… well no more Kliff, it’s over. The Raiders got run over at home again and look cooked. Virginia Tech got over Miami, and the Aggies gave up a late TD and with it the point spread. All others went to plan.
For the undefeated sides, this week is business as usual, stay on track, chalk up another W and move on to the next week. This should be the case for Alabama, FSU, Ohio and Baylor. The Heisman is seemingly a race in two. Johnny Manziel has the feet up this weekend (which promises some interesting tweets), so Winston has the stage to himself. Let’s hope the off field issues can be left there.
Where Are The Biscuits?
Washington at UCLA (Saturday Morning)
Both teams can score points. Washington averages near 40 and has an outstanding running back in Sankey. UCLA won a good test last week in Arizona as their QB Hundley keeps improving. Defensive menace Myles Jack starred on the other side of the ball last week and is one to watch. It will be tight, but UCLA will get over the line late. Taking them at -2.5.
Stanford at USC
Skov is a star, I love watching him play football. Gaffney’s work ethic is outstanding; he rolls up his sleeves and busts his balls for his yards. Kevin Hogan reminds me of how footballers used to be. Throw Montgomery in there with a few other names and there is no doubt of the legitimacy of these stars, but the thing that has the Cardinal humming is their ability to play as a team. USC are resurgent and traditionally these are close games, yet Stanford are hot so I’m taking them to cover at -4.
Miami at Duke
This is an interesting game, I had Miami last week but they got done at home. Duke are on an unexpected roll behind some solid defense and are in shape to give Miami another loss this week. Up in Durham they are value, I am going to take Duke at +3.
Oklahoma State at Texas
Yesterday I was ready to take Texas. The Big 12 has given me headaches this season. I have now convinced myself Oklahoma State are on the up and Texas have peaked – they have a couple of injuries, scraped over the line against the Mountaineers on the road last week, which isn’t an easy trip, nevertheless I’ve written it now so it’s done – I think. Oklahoma at -3.
Michigan State at Nebraska
Michigan State have never won at Lincoln, Michigan State have never won against Nebraska. The Spartans are up for this challenge and will do both this weekend. Michigan State by -6.5.
Florida at South Carolina
South Carolina need to win this to keep their SEC chances alive. Luckily they face the Gators who are imploding. They will win and get set for a blockbuster final season game against Clemson in two weeks. Gamecocks by -13.
The multi at $10 should return $500+
I was going to add Baylor at -27 over Texas Tech, but my love for Kliff isn’t reciprocated, I fear this team is my bunny, but if you are looking to add an extra leg take Baylor to cover, they haven’t not covered the spread only once this season, and their lines have been huge.
Note: The preceding ramblings should be treated as such. Odds may change.
