According to Ukraine, it is in talks with the US government to secure wartime aid. The House of Representatives on Saturday approved emergency funding to prevent a government shutdown.
This arrangement lasts 45 days and includes freezing aid to Ukraine. A Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesman said: “The Ukrainian government is now actively working with US partners to ensure that the new US budget resolution includes new funds to assist Ukraine.”
It is not yet clear how President Joe Biden’s administration can provide these funds. Biden has previously used his executive powers to release relief funds.
Biden said on Sunday that emergency funding does not mean America will abandon Ukraine. He said in a speech, “I want to assure our allies, the American people, and the people of Ukraine that you can count on our support. We will not withdraw.” A new financing proposal for Ukraine should be on the table in the coming “days and weeks.”
The United States has provided Ukraine with more than $40 billion (more than 37 billion euros) in military aid since the Russian invasion in February 2022.
But aid funding for Ukraine is increasingly under discussion in Washington. The Republican side in particular would prefer to see the money spent in other ways, including curbing illegal immigration.
