Although 1,000 people are registered for each resort in Paramaribo who may be eligible for an emergency aid package from the government, it appears on the ground that in some provinces, a large group of unregistered people are signing up for the emergency aid package. Office unit coordinator Shaquille van Throw acknowledges the need is greater than calculated, but says he can only help a limited number of people. “We want to help everyone, but we have to stick to the number of people we’ve registered,” says Van Throow.
The unit’s office, with personnel from the national army, county and county councillors, administrative services and other support services, is distributing a total of 13,000 emergency aid packages from the government in Paramaribo. The Ministries of Social Affairs, Housing, Regional Development, Sports and Defense, along with the various supervisory departments, are giving their full support to the project. Various ministers and district commissioners in Koroni, Nikere and Paramaribo have also lent their support in recent weeks and days. “So far we are satisfied with the way things are going. Occasionally, some small mistakes, but they are immediately discovered and corrected in the field. Only in the field of good anticipation have we been challenged, because people do not listen to instructions to stay at home as much as possible. They saw the military trucks, they came to us en masse, while this was not allowed. The army responded well to prevent disasters,” Van Throw said.
Various services still have a lot of work to do in this area to register and introduce people afterwards. “Mi no ben sabi tak” package ben prati. Un gim ‘wan because a libi in a kondre kon tranga,” a man said to an RR member in the Livorno area on Friday. He was allowed to sign up on the spot and then receive a package. Another local resident works with ID for a member of Enhead’s office with a request for a package. She was also offered a 25kg bag of rice and a bag of food. She thanked the workers.
On Friday, July 2, 2021, various government services involved in the ‘Distribution of Emergency Aid Packages’ project visited the Livorno resort. Meanwhile, emergency aid packages have been distributed in five districts of Paramaribo. In addition to Welgelegen, the regions of Rainville, Centrum, Latour (good expectation) and Livorno were visited. The districts of Beekhuizen, Blauwgrond, Flora, Munder, Pontbuiten, Tammenga and Weg naar Zee will follow next week.
