A 35-year-old woman from Duffel, near Antwerp, Belgium, is facing a prison sentence for suspected negligence. In 2019, her boyfriend fell down the stairs, but the woman failed to call an ambulance. The man later died in hospital from a severe skull fracture. “It wasn’t the first time, I just thought he was falling asleep in his stupor and I put a blanket on him,” her lawyer says.

At the end of September 2019, emergency services were called to the couple’s home in Mechelen. At the bottom of the stairs lay the man, in boxer shorts and covered with a blanket. At the hospital, doctors diagnosed several broken ribs, a skull fracture and a brain hemorrhage. The injuries resulted from a fall from the stairs.
