One company after another is moving to a subscription model. But a computer mouse subscription? We don’t have that yet. If the Dutch CEO of hardware maker Logitech has his way, such a mouse subscription will be available soon. You can then buy a computer mouse, which, along with the subscription, will continue to receive support “forever” with updates and new features.
Logitech CEO Hanneke Faber announced the plans in a conversation with the edgeThe site spoke to the Dutch CEO, who has been a member of Logitech since October of last year. The conversation revolved around the changes he wants to make at Logitech, including reducing CO2 emissions, but also about artificial intelligence and how this technology can be integrated into devices.
Then the keyboard and computer mouse are discussed. Faber talks about the so-called Mouse foreverWhich I once saw at Logitech’s Innovation Center. The idea is that you will never have to throw away your computer mouse, because it is of higher quality, has a beautiful design, but above all: it is constantly supported by software updates that add new functions.
Continue to profit from the customer
Anyway, you’re buying such a mouse. It’s still a one-time purchase, right? Not if you come up with a business model, Faber believes. “That’s obviously the challenge,” Faber says. “Can you develop a service model?” is the key question, she says. These days, companies innovate, but consumers ultimately have to upgrade by buying new devices.
“But with that in mind, I’m intrigued by the idea of Forever the mouse Which you update. “With a business model tied in,” Faber says. So she’s seriously considering a subscription mouse: a one-time purchase, but then you keep paying for updates and new features, including perhaps AI updates.
Hand over the old one and get a new one
Is a mouse really supposed to last forever? Faber doesn’t necessarily envision a mouse that is powered solely by software. “The Mouse forever It could also be a mouse that you return to the store after a while, and then you get another one. The returned mouse could be refurbished and resold. That’s also a business model.”
