Report: Trump misrepresented nearly $300,000 in foreign gifts | outside
Former US President Donald Trump failed to properly declare nearly $300,000 in foreign gifts during his term in office from 2017 to 2021. That’s what Democratic lawmakers in the US House of Representatives, the committee responsible for overseeing the government, said in a preliminary report.
By law, the US president must announce gifts worth more than $415 (388 euros). These gifts are then considered the property of the United States government. In the case of more valuable personal gifts, the President has the option of purchasing and keeping them from the government. In any case, gifts must be registered.
But the report says Trump did not. The former president and his family are said to have received gifts from countries such as China and Saudi Arabia, worth $291,000 (or about 275,000 euros).
Saudi dagger
Among the unannounced gifts was a Saudi dagger worth $24,000 (about $22,000). Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law who led delegations to the Middle East under the former president as a White House aide, would have bought this dagger.
The report said that the competent authorities do not know where the other gifts went. Trump was also going to get a life-size photo of himself from his counterpart from El Salvador. In addition, there is no trace of the golf clubs that the former president received from then Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. Sticks are worth several thousand dollars.
The parliamentary committee now wants to know if and what impact the undisclosed gifts had on US foreign policy.
