Robert Hallock from AMD has More details have been released About the upcoming Ryzen 7000 processors. I asked AMD’s Technical Marketing Director TechPowerUp about this, as the company’s presentation at Computex lacked depth.
Robert says the top-of-the-line 7000 series model will get 16 cores (32 threads). As mentioned in the presentation, CPU speeds will exceed 5GHz, and while it couldn’t make any promises about expected overclocking speeds, processors could easily reach 5.5GHz. It is not yet known whether the new Ryzen series will also have a 3D cache; AMD certainly still has plans for the future with the technology.
Robert also says that AMD is moving towards DDR5. Zen 4 will not support DDR4 memory. The idea is that ddr5 will be standard for the life of the AM5 socket, and he hopes to keep memory prices low as well. Ryzen CPUs are already known to benefit from faster memory speeds, which will not differ from the 7000 series.
TechPowerUp also asked about the new design of the heat spreaders. According to Robert, the notches are intended to maintain compatibility with AM4 coolers. Since AM4 sockets have room in the middle for capacitors, this is no longer the case with AM5. There was also no room under the heat diffuser, so instead of expanding the heatsink, they opted for this new design. Therefore AM4 coolers can in principle also be used in AM5 processors.
According to Robert, AMD is still a bit hesitant at the moment with exactly the performance gains expected from Ryzens. We should hear more about this later this summer. Full interview with Robert Hallock It can be read at TechPowerUp†
