Epic Games announces the transition to Unreal Engine 5.1 in a blog post. This includes support for the battleroyale game’s Nanite rendering system introduced in Unreal Engine 5. This “virtual geometry” system provides the ability to render objects in millions of polygons without negatively impacting performance. For example, according to Epic Games, individual trees gain around 300,000 polygons thanks to Nanite. Every building in the game is made up of “millions of polygons” thanks to Nanite.

Fortnite is also getting support for Lumen, which is a type of software ray tracing. In Fortnite, this technique is also used to reflect on glitter and water global illumination for ambient lighting at a frame rate of 60 fps. The game also gets Temporal Super Resolution, which is a temporary upgrade technology like Nvidia DLSS and AMD FSR 2.0.

Gamers can use the Nanite renderer on computers that have at least an Nvidia Maxwell or AMD GCN GPU or later. However, Epic Games recommends at least an Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 or AMD Radeon RX 5700. Nanite only works with DirectX 12. On PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles, Nanite, Lumen, and Temporal Super Resolution only work when 120fps mode is turned off, Epic says.
