In a new episode of the Geuze & Gorgels podcast, Monica Geuze, 29, talks about smells and colours of her first meeting with her new in-laws. Her boyfriend James Lawrence’s, 31, family live in London, so the first meeting took place there, in a typical English pub. Monica asked James for advice on what to eat there, but in retrospect, she didn’t have to.
“I was so sorry about that.”
Co-host Kaj Gorgels almost forgot Monica was in London and was very curious about how she got there. “It was really fun,” Monica begins her story, and then says she met James’ brother, his cousins and his grandmother. The first meeting took place in an English pub. “It was a really nice place and it was an hour from London. We went there for dinner.”
Monica ordered based on her friend’s recommendation. Fish and chipsa British classic, but one that “I regretted a lot”. When the dishes arrived on the table, Monica was shocked. “Everyone else got regular plates, but I got a big plate of fried fish and a kilo of chips,” she says with a laugh. “I felt so embarrassed because it was my first time eating with my in-laws and I got served like that.”
The rest of the menu—which was also oddly large—didn’t appeal to Monica either. “Then you sit in a pub with your in-laws and they eat disgusting food there.” Monica hated English black pudding the most. Cage could agree. “No, English black pudding is disgusting. It looks like black pudding.”
After her story, Kaj only wants to know one thing: Was Monica accepted by her husband’s family? Fortunately, Monica’s list selection didn’t create a bad first impression. Plus, “His family is so nice!”
I noticed that it was a bit difficult to communicate with James’s grandmother. “My English is not good and the acoustics in the tent were not good either.” Despite the court and communication problems with the grandmother, the first meeting with the in-laws was a success.
