Reducing the UK’s carbon dioxide emissions requires a “pragmatic approach”. Home Secretary Suella Braverman said: “We will not save the planet by bankrupting the British people.” “We need a proportionate approach that also serves our goals,” she told Times Radio.

She made her comments in the run-up to Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s speech later this week. It is expected to delay some government policies that support Britain’s long-term plan to be climate neutral by 2050. Measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions involve additional costs. Meanwhile, the UK is suffering from very high inflation, leaving many Britons without money to buy things like groceries, heat their homes, and travel.

One measure that may be reversed concerns the ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars. The government now aims to ban this from 2030. Britain may postpone this until 2035, in line with the EU target.
