Meryl Smulders won a bronze medal at the MotoGP World Championships in Nantes. He was number three at the Olympic Games in Tokyo, ahead of only American winner Felicia Stancil and Swiss Zoe Clesens.
The bronze medalist’s sister, Laura Smulders, also reached the final. However, she did not go beyond seventh place. The third Dutchman in the final battle, Manon Finstra, came in higher.
For Nick Keeman, the World Cup ended in a huge disappointment. The Olympic champion and defending champion finished seventh in the semi-finals, where a place in the top four was required to reach the final.
In the semi-finals, Kimmann started from the outside as usual, but failed to get past the first corner in front and then crushed. The 26-year-old cyclocross rider from Lutten in Overijssel was unable to move on the latter part of the narrow track in Nantes.
Keeman was the only Dutchman in the semi-finals. Guy Schippers and Dave van der Burgh were eliminated in the playoffs. Mitchell Schutmann crashed in the quarter-finals.
