Eighteen-year-old Gauff believes that more relaxed preparation, via YouTube and Twitch, has helped her become a better tennis player this year. “I’m more stress-free. It was a big change for me, because before that I had always been just involved in sports.”
“A few months ago, it was unheard of for me to watch live on Twitch before a big tournament. I felt like I should focus my whole life on tennis.”

Max screen time
Goff has now given up on that idea and feels comfortable about it. “I’ve realized that I also have other interests and it’s OK to embrace them. I started this at Roland Garros and feel my results have improved. It’s quite the opposite of preparation than usual.”
Earlier, the currently number eight in the world admitted to scrolling for hours on TikTok sometimes. “I set the maximum screen time for myself, but I kept entering the password just to be able to access it. I didn’t really stick to it,” Goff said with a laugh.

Young Americans can look back on a great season. She lost the final at Roland Garros in Paris and reached the quarter-finals at the US Open. On the other hand, there are two early eliminations at the Australian Open and Wimbledon.
Gauff is still hoping for a place during the WTA Finals, which begins at the end of October. For that, she has to do well this week at the San Diego Open that started on Monday, but the motivation was at a lower level with Gauff.
“This is the hardest part of the season for everyone. The Grand Slam is over and you really want to get to the end of the season as soon as possible. I will stick to myself as best I can and finish the season as best I can. I am happy with that.” San Diego is the starting point for the end .”
